People who came here seeking safety deserve the same compassion that we’d expect for ourselves and our families. Yet for decades, successive governments have inflicted needless cruelty on refugees and people seeking asylum by abandoning them in unsafe and untenable conditions in Nauru and Papua New Guinea.[1]

Now Labor is expanding this cruelty by signing a shadowy $2.5 billion deal with the Nauruan Government, passing legislation that strips people of their legal rights and attempting to deport more people to Nauru.

They are putting families at risk of being permanently torn apart.

At the last election, Australians voted against that politics of fear and division. We saw what was happening in the United States, with ICE tearing people from their communities, and we resoundingly rejected it.

Offshore detention is also incredibly costly and wasteful. Australian taxpayers are footing the bill for a hush-hush $790 million deal with an American private prison company to warehouse just 100 refugees on Nauru.

The secrecy and lack of integrity is alarming. Our government is inflicting cruelty in our name and funding it with our hard-earned money.

It is time to speak out and make sure no one else is subjected to these brutal, inhumane conditions.

We all want to live in a country that treats people with fairness and respect. Everyone should be treated equally under the law. No one should be punished twice - if you’ve served your time, you shouldn’t be deported to a remote prison island, simply because you are a refugee.

This is a slippery slope. If we accept some people being arbitrarily deported to Nauru - even when their refugee claims have been accepted - where will it end? What other families will be torn apart?

By raising our voices, we can help to shine a light on what’s happening behind closed doors and show our leaders that we won’t let cruelty and cover-ups go unnoticed. We need to act now to protect people from being ripped from their families and communities, and help bring an end to offshore detention once and for all.

I am writing to you as your constituent because I am deeply concerned about the ongoing cruelty of offshore detention and the imminent threat of deportations to Nauru.

I do not want to see people from the NZYQ cohort deported to Nauru.

We know very little about the people set to be deported. But here’s the thing - it doesn't matter what a person has done in the past, no one deserves to be treated as less than equal under the law.

People accused of committing previous offences have served their time, they shouldn’t be punished twice simply because of where they were born.

Offshore detention has caused too much suffering and shame for too long and it must end now, before any more lives are put at risk.

As my representative, I’m asking you to speak with the Minister for Home Affairs and the Prime Minister and urge them to:
1. Stop deportations to Nauru and keep families together;
2. Immediately evacuate people who have been abandoned offshore to receive urgent medical treatment, and;
3. End offshore processing for good and bring people to permanent safety.

Please use your voice to stop this injustice. I’m calling on you to help end this cruelty and ensure people can live in safety and dignity once and for all.
