I am writing to ask you as my MP and Senators, to oppose the Home Affairs Legislation Amendment (2025 Measures 1) Bill - which will pave the way for mass deportations to Nauru.

This new Bill and the Albanese Governments latest moves are a cruel attack on migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum. The Bill is a rush-job to allow the Government to avoid accountability for mass deportations. It poses a serious threat to the rule of law and all of our fundamental legal and human rights.

I am deeply concerned about the wide-ranging impact of this Bill.

In removing the right to natural justice from decisions about deportation to third countries, it marks a fundamental departure from how Australian law currently operates. It sets a precedent for the removal of basic legal protections.

Natural Justice:
Natural justice is the basic right to fairness - including notice of, and the ability to respond to, government decisions that determine a person’s future. 
These are life-altering decisions that may result in removal to serious harm, loss of medical treatment, or permanent family separation. The Government has already made factual errors in such cases - this Bill would remove accountability for correcting them and deny people the right even to be notified, as well as to respond.

Broad drafting and implications:
Like the Bills rushed through late last year, this Bill is drafted extremely broadly. The Bill removes natural justice for decisions made under last year’s new powers. Despite assurances it would affect only a small number of people, in reality it could apply to tens of thousands of people.

Given the broad reaching implications, unwinding of fundamental legal and human rights, and dangerous precedent this Bill is trying to set up, I urge you to vote against this reckless and dangerous Bill.
